We were all impressed with the summer presentation on glass art by Matthew Patterson and the wonderful display of his art in the SHPC Library.  Now, Matthew, Assistant Professor of The Visual Arts Department of The University of South Alabama, has invited us to a glass blowing demonstration at the Glass Arts Building on campus. The demonstration will be Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 9:30 am. Immediately following the demonstration anyone wishing to participate in a hands on experience will be given the opportunity to design and make a kiln formed bowl.   All bowls will be donated to ART SOUP 2018.

ART SOUP 2018

Art Soup is the annual fund raiser for Loaves and Fish Community Ministry Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation committed to serving the needs of the homeless in Mobile, Alabama since 1979. Proceeds from this event will go directly to the following local organizations that assist the homeless every-day: Penelope House, Ransom Ministries, Family Promise, McKemie Place, and USA Student Run Free Clinic. Art Soup will be on November 16, 2018, 6-9pm at Azalea Manor, 751 Dauphin Street, Mobile Al. 36602.  Additional Information:  http://www.artsoupmobile.org/

If you would like to go to Matthew’s demonstration and/or participate in bowl-making, contact Claire Hamlin at (251)776-3003 or [email protected].  We will need a headcount for the bowl-making so they can have enough supplies on hand.

Directions:  The Art Department parking lot is the only large lot directly on University Blvd., across from William and Mary Dr.  The Visual Arts building is straight in front of you after you enter the lot.  The glass labs are behind the main building, down the wide sidewalk.  If you want to carpool, let Claire know and carpools will leave SHPC from behind the Chapel at 9:15 am.

Stones That Shout

2018 Lenten Series

Lent is a time of preparation and introspection. In this 40 day season of sacrifice and prayer we journey along the well-worn path that leads to the table on Maundy Thursday, the cross on Good Friday, and the empty tomb on Easter morning. The stories that we read and study during this season remind us of who Jesus is, what he has come to do, and how we are called to follow him.

Our journey of Lent is 40 days as a reminder of the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness in fasting and prayer, where he was tempted to turn stones into bread. Throughout his ministry he would encounter other stones, some ready to be cast at sinners in punishment. He would use the image of stones or rocks in his teaching to explain the importance of having a strong foundation in your life, and how his own death and resurrection would embody the words of the psalmist “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” Ultimately, a stone would be rolled against his tomb, sealing the death that he suffered for us, and three days later, the women who went to anoint his body would find that same stone rolled away in wonder.

These stories from Jesus’ life are the foundation of our faith, the solid rock upon which the church is built. This month we will begin a sermon series that will last throughout Lent and into Easter entitled, “Stones that Shout” as we study these important texts on Sunday mornings and their Old Testament echoes on Wednesdays during our mid-week worship services.

Starting with neurologist and author Dr. Daniel Potts‘ explanation of dementia and ways to bolster personhood through expressive arts, to learn what life is like after a dementia diagnosis from International Advocate Brian LeBlanc. Author, Ellen Potts will talk about decision making along the caregiver journey, followed by a screening of the film produced by Dr. Potts entitled, “Do You Know Me Now?”. After lunch, author and songwriter Don Wendorf, PsyD, will soothe the caregiver’s soul with his lyrics and poetry. Finally, founder of WomenAgainstAlzheimer’s, ClergyAgainstAlzheimer’s, and HelpStampOUTAlzheimer’s FaceBook community, Lynda Everman will teach us how to turn our caregiving experience into advocacy for better care, prevention, and a cure on a national level.

Adult Education

Christian Education is a ministry at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church for all ages so “that the man (and woman and child) of God may be adequately equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17). Because the 21st Century poses difficult challenges to Christians, Spring Hill Presbyterian Church offers this ministry to everyone that they might “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18) and “having all sufficiency in all things to abound to every good work” (2 Corinthisans 9:8) in our daily lives.

Each of our offerings promises members and visitors encouragement and challenge in their daily walk of being faithful Christians at home, work, school, and leisure.  We hope your experience of Christian Education at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church is life-affirming and faith-enriching.

Unless otherwise noted, all these classes meet Sunday mornings from 9:00 to 10:00.
